Thackley 2-1 Grimsby Borough

Thackley Player/Manager Patrick McGuire

Thackley moved to the top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division yesterday afternoon as they secured a 2-1 win over Grimsby Borough at Dennyfield.

A Liam Higton own goal on 18 minutes put Thackley ahead and the lead was doubled eight minutes from time when Jack Normanton rounded the 'keeper to slot home his fourth goal of the campaign.

The visitors reduced the deficit on 88 minutes courtesy of a Jack Bradbury goal however it proved in vain as The Dennyboys saw the game out to claim the points.

The game also saw the new sin-bin ruling come into play as Borough's Liam Higton was temporarily sent to the dug-out shortly before the hour mark.

Speaking about the match Thackley Player/Manager Patrick McGuire said: "We went into the game full of confidence after winning 3 games on the spin, but we knew Grimsby would also be confident, coming here as current league leaders.

"It’s the best I’ve seen us start a game and we got into our passing groove quickly which caused Grimsby problems. It was our best performance of the season so far and the lads still came in disappointed to concede a goal late on.

"We must be more ruthless in front of goal to make our lives more comfortable but it’s another win and an improved performance again"

He added: "It seems the league is going to be wide open this year so it’s important we try to stay with the pack at the right end of the table as we look to improve on last year’s position in the table."

Next up for Thackley is a trip to Thornaby in the FA Vase Second Qualifying Round next Saturday (15:00).
