Selby Town 2-5 Nostell Miners Welfare

Nostell Miners Welfare finished the season off in winning fashion yesterday as they recorded a 5-2 win over Selby Town in the Northern Counties East League Division One.

Danny Edwards gave Welfare the lead on 10 minutes before Jack Owen doubled the advantage on 23 minutes in front of the 133 spectators at The Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium.

The afternoon got better for Nostell on 35 minutes as Kane Reece added a third but the home side hit back as goals from Liam Flanagan and Alex Burton narrowed Welfare's lead to one goal going into the break.

However the second period saw Nostell add to their lead as Jack Owen made it 4-2 on 58 minutes before completing his hat-trick on 65 minutes to make it five.

The result means Welfare finish the season in 5th place on 74 points.

Speaking after yesterday's game Nostell Miners Welfare Joint Manager Jason Dodsworth said: "Pleased with the three points but we weren’t too impressed at half-time and the players knew it.

"We were 3 nil up playing well and it could have been a lot more to be honest. Then we decided the game was done and started to do the wrong things in wrong areas and allowed Selby to get two back. Second half we got back to basics and killed the game off."

He continued: "Really pleased with the season and it’s been a massive turnaround for the club. Good to get a few of our under 21's a game today too and they all did really well there’s some big talent there.

"We’ve got in the FA Cup for next season and again that’s a big plus for the club. It’s a great club and the lads have been a credit to us all season so I would like to thank the players for all their efforts they have been tremendous.

"We will sit down and discuss next season now with the chairman and hopefully we can push for promotion next season."
